Le Quartier chinois symbolise nos racines, la lutte historique des Chinois pour survivre dans les pays étrangers, en essayant de préserver nos coutumes et nos traditions à travers des festivals, des célébrations et des rassemblements. Arrivée de Hong Kong dans les années soixante-dix, il y avait beaucoup d’étudiants chinois. Certains vivaient à l’intérieur de l’Église catholique chinoise, qui disposait d’un dortoir et d’une grande cour. Ces derniers ont été démolis par la construction du complexe Guy-Favreau en 1984, qui a réduit le Quartier chinois à l’ouest. J’ai rencontré mon défunt mari français, dans un restaurant chinois aujourd’hui disparu. À l’époque, il était tabou de former un couple interracial. J’ai rencontré beaucoup de résistance de la part de ma famille et de mes amis. Finalement, nous avons organisé notre banquet de mariage au restaurant Lotus Garden (à l’angle de Clark & De La Gauchetière).

Chinatown is a symbol of our roots, of the historical struggle of the Chinese for survival in foreign countries, trying to preserve our customs and traditions through festivals, celebrations, and gatherings. I came from Hong Kong in the seventies. There were many Chinese students. Some lived inside the Chinese Catholic Church, which had a dormitory and a big backyard. Those were demolished by the construction of the Guy-Favreau complex in 1984, which shrank Chinatown from the west. I met my late husband, who’s from France, in a now-disappeared Chinese restaurant. Back then, it was taboo to be in an interracial couple. I faced a lot of resistance from my family and friends. Eventually, we held our wedding party at the Lotus Garden Restaurant (Clark & De La Gauchetière).
