Mon grand-père, Dun Shong Lee, est l’un des pères fondateurs du Quartier chinois de Montréal. Deux adresses, qui se côtoient sur De La Gauchetière, ont une grande signification pour moi: l’emplacement original de la première épicerie chinoise de Montréal (Leong Jung) fondée par mon grand-père; et l’Association familiale des Lee, dont je suis maintenant un représentant. Elles symbolisent mes origines et mon avenir. Ils juxtaposent les espoirs et les aspirations de ma famille qui s’est installée dans un nouveau pays pour une vie meilleure, et moi, qui représente une nouvelle génération chargée de préserver la culture, la langue et les traditions. C’est un fier rappel des coutumes que j’ai intégrées dans ma vie quotidienne en tant que Canadien d’origine chinoise de deuxième génération. J’ai la chance de pouvoir voir l’évolution du Quartier chinois, un espace dynamique aux multiples facettes qui représente le patrimoine, la communauté, la résilience et l’identité ouverte à tous.
我的祖父李殿崇是滿地可唐人街的創始人之一。在 De La Gauchetière 街並排的兩個地址對我來說意義重大：第一個是我祖父創辦的滿地可第一家華人雜貨店良棧有限公司的原址；第二個是我現在擔任代表的李氏公所。它們象徵著我的來歷和去處。也象徵著我家人的抱負和願望，為了尋找更好的生活而搬到新的國家，而我現在則成為了負責保存文化、語言和傳統的新世代代表。作為加拿大華人第二代，我將這些習俗融入日常生活中，引以為榮。我很幸運能見證唐人街的演變，這是一個充滿活力、多面性的空間，代表著傳統、社群、堅毅和身份認同，並開放給所有人。
My grandfather, Dun Shong Lee, was one of the founding fathers of Montreal’s Chinatown. Two addresses, side by side on De La Gauchetière, have great significance to me: the original location of the first Chinese grocery store in Montreal (Leong Jung) founded by my grandfather; and the Lee Family Association, where I am now a representative. They symbolize where I come from and where I’m going. They juxtapose the hopes and aspirations of my family moving to a new country for a better life, to me now representing a new generation responsible for preserving culture, language, and traditions. It’s a proud reminder of customs that I have included in my everyday life as a second-generation Chinese Canadian. I’m fortunate to be able to witness the evolution of Chinatown, a vibrant, multifaceted space that represents heritage, community, resilience, and identity that welcomes all.
