Le Quartier chinois est, pour moi, un lieu porteur de mémoires, de traditions et de célébrations. Je suis profondément attaché au paysage urbain, aux symboles et aux institutions du Quartier chinois. Un quartier qui représente pour moi l’ancrage culturel à mon héritage familial chinois, un quartier où je me sens bien, chez moi. Mon grand-père a vécu la majeure partie de sa vie dans le Quartier chinois et a longtemps travaillé au mythique Café Lotus de la rue Clark. Mon père a grandi de l’autre côté de la rue. Je me souviens des grands banquets organisés par la famille Wong, le long comptoir et les délicieuses brioches au beurre de la pâtisserie Ho Ho’s, l’ambiance et la couleur des rues et les rencontres fortuites d’amis et de membres de la famille, lors de promenades sur la rue De La Gauchetière. Comme professionnel de l’aménagement, je l’ai analysé en imaginant le concept « d’enchinoisement » pour qualifier ses phases successives de développement et de construction identitaire. Je souhaite que son échelle humaine et son unicité soient maintenues et célébrées, qu’il demeure un lieu du quotidien et de destination.

For me, Chinatown is a place full of memories, traditions, and celebrations. I am deeply attached to the urban landscape, symbols, and institutions of Chinatown, a neighbourhood that represents my cultural anchor, a place where I feel at home. My grandfather spent most of his life in Chinatown and worked for a long time at the legendary Lotus Cafe. My father grew up on the other side of the street. I remember the grand banquets organized by the Wong family, the long counter and the delicious butter buns from Ho Ho’s bakery, the atmosphere and the colour of the streets, and the chance encounters with friends and family while strolling on De La Gauchetière. As an urban planner, I analyzed Chinatown by imagining the concept of “Chinatownization” to describe its phases of development and identity building. My hope is that its human scale and uniqueness is sustained and celebrated, that it remains a place of daily life as well as a destination.
