Le Quartier chinois est l’endroit à Montréal où je peux vivre et affirmer mes racines culturelles physiquement, émotionnellement et spirituellement. C’est un endroit où j’ai ressenti une affinité tacite avec d’autres étrangers en public, que ce soit par le biais d’une langue commune ou d’un amour partagé pour des chansons par des chanteuses bien-aimées comme Teresa Teng. Je me souviens également du Quartier chinois comme un endroit où ma famille allait chercher des ingrédients que nous ne pouvions trouver nulle part ailleurs, afin de préparer des plats délicieux qui nous rappellent nos origines chinoises brunéiennes. Je souhaite que le Quartier chinois continue d’être un lieu de rencontres entre les générations et un sanctuaire pour les diverses communautés qui aiment le Quartier chinois et souhaitent y trouver un lieu d’appartenance.

Chinatown is the place in Montreal where I can embrace my cultural roots physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s a place where I have felt an unspoken affinity with other strangers in public, whether it’s through a mutual language or a shared love for songs by cherished singers like Teresa Teng. I also remember Chinatown as a place where my family would go to find ingredients that we couldn’t get anywhere else, in order to make delicious food that reminded us of our Chinese Bruneian origins. I wish for Chinatown to continue being a place of bridges between generations, and as a sanctuary for diverse communities who love Chinatown and wish to find a place of belonging in the neighbourhood.
